Candidacy

What spinal decompression is used for

Decompression is aimed at pain coming from the disc and the nerve root it irritates. Confirming that pain source is the whole point of the initial exam.

When decompression isn't appropriate

A responsible clinic screens these out before scheduling any table time:

  • Spinal fusion, hardware or artificial discs at the treated level
  • Severe osteoporosis or a recent vertebral fracture
  • Spinal tumors, infection, or unexplained weight loss with back pain
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm
  • Pregnancy
  • Cauda equina signs — saddle numbness, or loss of bowel or bladder control (emergency care)
