Does spinal decompression hurt?

Plans commonly run somewhere between 8 and 24 sessions over several weeks, tapering in frequency. The number depends on how long symptoms have been present, the severity of the disc findings and how you respond in the first two weeks.

How soon will I feel a difference?

Some people notice reduced leg or arm symptoms within the first several sessions; others change more gradually. A pattern called centralization — pain retreating out of the limb and back toward the spine — is an encouraging early sign.

Is it the same as an inversion table?

No. An inversion table applies uncontrolled whole-body gravity traction. A decompression table applies a measured, computer-controlled cycling force to a targeted segment, with the patient positioned to bias that level.

Is spinal decompression safe?

For appropriately screened patients it is considered a low-risk conservative therapy. Safety comes from the screening: fusion hardware at the treated level, severe osteoporosis, fracture, tumor, infection, abdominal aortic aneurysm and pregnancy are all reasons not to proceed.

Can I still work out during treatment?

Usually yes, with modifications. Heavy loaded flexion — deadlifts, sit-ups, bent-over rows — is typically paused early on, while walking and prescribed stabilization work are encouraged.

Do I need an MRI first?

Durability depends on what happens after the plan. Patients who keep up stabilization exercise, manage sitting posture and address load habits tend to hold gains longer. Periodic maintenance visits are common.

It's a conservative option many people try before surgical consultation, and some avoid surgery after a course of care. It is not a substitute for urgent surgical evaluation when there is progressive weakness or cauda equina signs.
